SYNCHRONIZED SKATING

What is Synchronized Skating?

Synchronized skating is a fast-growing discipline of figure skating where teams of 8–20 skaters perform together on the ice in unison. Think of it as “team figure skating” — blending the artistry and athleticism of singles skating with the precision and teamwork of a group sport.

Skaters move as one unit to music, performing intricate formations and transitions that include circles, lines, blocks, wheels, and intersections. The challenge is not only in executing difficult footwork and edges but also in staying perfectly in sync with the team while skating at high speeds.

Why It’s Unique:

  • Teamwork: Unlike singles or pairs skating, synchronized skating emphasizes cooperation, timing, and trust among all team members.

  • Choreography: Programs are set to music and feature patterns, lifts (at higher levels), step sequences, and creative formations that flow seamlessly across the ice.

  • Variety of Levels: Just like other figure skating disciplines, synchro has categories for beginners through to elite international competitors. Teams are grouped by age and skill level.

  • Global Reach: Synchronized skating is recognized by the International Skating Union (ISU), and there are national and international competitions, including the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships.

What Makes It Exciting to Watch?
Synchronized skating combines speed, power, and elegance. Spectators are often amazed by the way 16 skaters can fly down the ice in perfect alignment, change formation in a split second, and weave through each other at close range with breathtaking precision.

Whether you are new to figure skating or already love the sport, synchro offers a unique opportunity to be part of a team while still enjoying the artistry and technical challenge of skating.

Synchronized skating is an excellent way to build strong basic skills while developing confidence, communication, and team spirit. Skaters work on CanSkate Stage 5 & 6 or STAR 1 & up.
